Now I am going to try and synthesize the "problems" with law that I hear everyday into a simple statement....

I am also going to tell you that it is not a good thing to mortgage your life to your profession.  No matter what we tell ourselves this is a problem.  Now let me go a little further and tell you that the problem with law is that it requires you to do the work....over and over again. You have to reinvent the wheel every single day of your life. 

 
Problem with Law #1

As a lawyer you only get paid for the work you do, 
the hours you bill and the clients you bring in. 
If you can't work you don't get paid.

Let me explain this statement and then I will propose a solution that will get you quite excited. As a lawyer you are required to get up everyday and do the legal work. YOU ARE THE COG IN THE MACHINE. 

Wouldn't it be great if you could do

No matter how efficient your legal staff is or how automated your practice is....you are responsible for the work product. Now worst of all you will have to do the work over and over again all through your life. 

  • A new client comes in and you have to explain the law to him. (you will explain the same thing thousands of times in your life) 
  • You have to quote a fee, justify your fee to your client and sometimes fight to collect your fee (you will do this over and over again during your legal career) 
  • You will then have to do the work. (The buck always stops on your desk)
  • During your legal career you will.... You will waste thousands of hours of your life doing repetitive functions over and over again. 

I am going to break this to you bluntly.....and please don’t take offense but in some respects being a lawyer is no different than being the fry cook at McDonalds. Every day the fry cook goes to work and does repetitive tasks...sound familiar... 

Now we are highly paid "fry cooks" who do help people but we are still the cog in the machine. Also, god forbid if something happens to your ability to practice law your income stops dead in its tracks.

Problem with Law #2

If you have to stop practicing law due to injury, 
disability, accident or any other reason...your stop earning money.  There is no equity built by the practice of law

If you are injured, disabled, blinded, incapacitated or suspended or disbarred from practicing law your paycheck stops right then and there. (On a side note that is why every lawyer needs disability insurance and a lots of it) 

See, there is absolutely no long term equity built by practicing law. Believe me I run my own law practice and if I tried to sell it I would make hardly anything. The main asset of my law practice is my brain.  Even if you are a partner in a big firm see how long they keep paying you if you can't practice.

In the end we are paid for the rental of our brain....nothing more. Now, before I tell you the solution, I want to give you a little history about me and how I discovered this solution. First, I am not a disgruntled attorney who hates the practice of law or who has not strived to make the most of the practice.

  6.  I have been appointed and served as a Quasi-Judicial officer, hearing officer and Special Master and have made rulings on thousands of cases. I have ruled on more cases than some of the judges I appear in front of...
  7. I have negotiated deals over dinner with movie stars, represented independent movie production companies and even appeared in independent films. (I have come to the realization that I truly am a bad actor and should stay behind the camera or at least not open my mouth in these films.) 

And much, much more than I can list here. 

Why am I “tooting my own horn” about the exciting, glamorous parts of my law practice? Because I am not an attorney who wants to leave the practice and who is promoting some get rich quick scheme....I have seem many of them before.

Now I have told you about the exciting parts of my practice but I will tell you that no practice is all glamour. 

  1. I have also handled cases for people that have no money, no assets and no hope
  2. I have had a thousand sad and horrible stories walk through my door 
  3. I have seen people with horrible mental illnesses and traumatic childhoods
  4. I have felt the heart break and sadness of clients who have lost it all and have had no where to turn.

No matter what, I have always felt it a privilege, duty and honor to help people who have been less fortunate than myself.

Question: Don't you have to worry about malpractice from giving bad advice.

Answer: I am going to tell you right out that it is a lot safer to "publish" a legal how to manual then to actually do the work.  In this day and age clients often scream malpractice or contact your local bar with their problems.

I think you should sell premium information for premium prices.  It is your business though and you will have to do what you believe is best for your business.
